Josey: Historical Talk and Listening Experience

Josephine, born in Millfield, Northumberland in 1828, became a significant Victorian social reformer and advocate for the rights of women. Her story is at the centre of a new audio musical commissioned by November Club and written by singer – songwriter Katie Doherty, featuring the voices and contributions of local women.

Find out more about Josephine Butler and her incredible legacy in a historical talk led by Bryony Taylor.  Bryony is a researcher and arts event producer currently researching a PhD at Northumbria University.  Bryony will look at Josephine’s legacy and how it can be considered through a contemporary lens.

Audiences will then be able to encounter Josey, the Indignant Daughter, in a shared listening experience. Here’s what some previous listeners have said about Josey:

“A really impressive piece beautifully written & performed. A pleasure to listen to a piece of theatre & so nice it’s availed to such a wide audience. Fascinating subject matter that’s both thought provoking & relevant. Such catchy tunes too!”

“I liked that it was located amongst communities in the North East and celebrated the life of a trailblazing historic woman from the area.”

The event is free but booking required.
